New Detroit Pistons guard Caris LeVert is reuniting with a familiar face in Detroit: former Cleveland Cavaliers head coach J.B. Bickerstaff.
LeVert, who played under Bickerstaff for three seasons in Cleveland, pointed to their time together as a turning point in his career – particularly on the defensive end.
“J.B. brought out a different part of my game, and I’ve always said that,” the player told The Athletic’s Hunter Patterson.
“Once I went to Cleveland, I was asked to play defense. Before then, I wasn’t really asked to play defense, and I think that’s one of the stronger parts of my game now.”
The 6’6″ guard acknowledged that his defensive skill set wasn’t emphasized earlier in his NBA journey, but Bickerstaff challenged him to evolve.
“Before I went to Cleveland and played under J.B., I was a different player, and I think he challenged me to be the more well-rounded player I am today,” LeVert added. “So I’m definitely looking forward to this time around.”
LeVert’s relationship with Bickerstaff was a significant factor in his decision to sign with Detroit, and he enters the upcoming season with optimism about continuing that developmental trajectory.
