NBA legend Allen Iverson clarified one of the most quoted lines in league history during a recent appearance, using his platform to emphasize the value of preparation—and praise 2025 NBA Finals MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in the process.
Speaking to young athletes at an event hosted by The No Flukes Foundation, Iverson revisited the infamous “practice” soundbite that has followed him for decades.
“All-Star. All-NBA. Hall of Famer. Top 75 of all-time. You think I didn’t practice?” Iverson said, addressing the crowd. “So, if I didn’t, that just shows you how good I was, if I didn’t practice.”
Iverson then pointed to Gilgeous-Alexander’s rise as proof that dedication and repetition are essential for greatness.
“You think Shai didn’t practice to become the MVP, best player in the world? You have to practice,” he added.
While Iverson never captured an NBA championship during his 14-year career, his impact on a new generation of guards—including SGA—remains undeniable.
The original “practice” rant came in 2002 during a press conference, when Iverson was responding to criticism after missing a session.
