The New York Knicks are still in serious contention to land free agent Ben Simmons, according to a report from Ian Begley of SNY.

Begley noted that Simmons “is certainly a candidate” for the team’s final standard roster spot and that New York maintained “strong interest” in signing the former All-Star as recently as this week.

Simmons, 28, is expected to decide on his next team within days, with the Knicks and Sacramento Kings emerging as the two most aggressive suitors, per Brian Windhorst of ESPN.

The 6-foot-10 point forward appeared in 17 games for the Los Angeles Clippers after signing a minimum deal in February. He averaged 2.9 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 3.1 assists in 16.4 minutes per game.

While Simmons’ production has dipped in recent years due to injuries and role limitations, his career averages of 13.1 points, 7.4 boards, and 7.2 assists still reflect his potential value.

New York views him as a low-risk veteran who can offer defensive flexibility and secondary playmaking off the bench. The Knicks are also evaluating Landry Shamet for their final roster spot.

Begley added that the franchise has salary room to add a rookie free agent—possibly Kansas wing Kevin McCullar—and a veteran minimum contract, but would need to complete a trade to open up a third standard roster slot.

New York remains under the second tax apron of $207.8 million, giving them limited but strategic financial flexibility as they finalize their offseason plans.

All three of the Knicks’ two-way contract spots are currently vacant, providing additional options for roster maneuvering in the coming weeks.

Simmons has also drawn interest from the Phoenix Suns and Boston Celtics, though neither is considered a front-runner at this stage.
