The New York Knicks have shown “some interest” in LeBron James as he prepares to explore free agency, according to Jake Fischer. The report comes as James moves toward his first departure from the Los Angeles Lakers after eight seasons.

New York enters the 2026 offseason as reigning NBA champions after finishing 53–29 in the regular season and securing the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference. The core of the roster remained highly productive, led by Jalen Brunson at 26.0 points and 6.8 assists per game and Karl-Anthony Towns at 20.1 points and 11.9 rebounds per game.

James, 41, remained an efficient primary creator during the 2025–26 season with the Lakers, averaging 20.9 points, 7.2 assists, and 6.1 rebounds on 51.5% shooting across 60 games. Los Angeles finished 53–29 and reached the Western Conference semifinals before being eliminated by the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The Lakers’ roster structure shifted during the season toward Luka Doncic, who averaged 33.5 points, 8.3 assists, and 7.7 rebounds, signaling a transition away from James as the long-term centerpiece. Austin Reaves also signed a four-year extension after a 23.3-point scoring season, further defining the franchise’s direction.

After James left the Lakers, his agent Rich Paul has reportedly received interest from multiple franchises, with James prioritizing championship contention over maximizing salary.

Charania reported that James is taking time to evaluate his options with no set timetable for a decision. He added that roughly a dozen teams have made contact, and that the forward’s free agency is not expected to delay offseason roster activity across the league.

New York’s financial situation remains a key variable in any pursuit. The Knicks are operating near the second apron after retaining key rotation players and extending depth pieces, limiting flexibility for a high-salary addition without corresponding roster moves.

The Knicks’ current rotation is built around Brunson, Towns, OG Anunoby, and Mikal Bridges, with Josh Hart providing secondary creation and rebounding.

James’ next destination remains open, with several contenders monitoring his situation as he evaluates competitive and structural fit. New York’s reported interest places the defending champions among a growing list of teams linked to the four-time MVP as free agency develops.
