Stephen Curry isn’t hanging up his jersey any time soon, at least not with the Golden State Warriors. In a recent conversation with Complex’s Speedy Morman, Curry made it clear that when the day does come, he wants full control over how and when it happens.
“I’m kind of just taking it in two-year chunks,” the player explained, giving insight into how he mentally structures the later years of his NBA journey. “You have to give yourself some motivation to go after.”
Though many players nearing the tail end of their careers cite the grind of an 82-game season as a burden, Curry sees it differently.
“The offseasons, for me, are the hardest,” he admitted. “The games are so much fun, you get lost in the game. That’s the easy part. So if I get through offseasons, that’s a mark for how long I can push it.”
His words reveal a player who still thrives on the nightly thrill of competition but is increasingly mindful of the physical and mental toll between seasons.
Curry also spoke candidly about his legacy and the goals that still drive him, particularly in relation to the all-time scoring list. While he’s never been singularly obsessed with stats, he acknowledges the intrigue.
“I do that math all the time,” he said. “Just to get in your head how long do you have to play and what level to catch those at the top of that list.”
Yet, he was quick to clarify that chasing milestones isn’t the main reason he continues to compete: “That’s not why I’ll keep going. It’s more that I want to be at a level where we’re competing and playing for championships and hopefully control as much of that as possible down the stretch of my career.”
As of now, Curry ranks 27th in all-time scoring with 25,386 points. If he continues to score at his usual pace, projections suggest he could surpass Moses Malone, currently holding the 10th spot with 29,580 points, within the next three to four seasons.
Still, for Curry, the allure of climbing higher on the leaderboard is secondary to his ultimate motivation: staying at a championship-caliber level until he decides it’s time to walk away.
