The San Antonio Spurs have announced a substantial investment of more than $1 billion to support the development of a new downtown arena as part of the ambitious initiative known as Project Marvel.
In a formal letter addressed to Mayor Ron Nirenberg and City Manager Erik Walsh, the franchise outlined its significant financial commitment and vision for the future of both the team and the city.
According to the letter, the Spurs plan to invest $500 million specifically toward the construction of a new arena, with a pledge to fully cover any potential cost overruns.
In addition, another $500 million will be directed toward private development projects in the surrounding downtown area, further enhancing the neighborhood and boosting the local economy.
Overall, the total cost of the larger project could reach as high as $4 billion, factoring in additional public and private sector contributions.
Peter J. Holt, Chairman of Spurs Sports & Entertainment, emphasized the team’s dedication to the city in his correspondence with city officials.
He wrote:
“Since the City of San Antonio first initiated discussions with us regarding a possible collaboration, we have remained steadfast in our goal of reaching a fair and forward-thinking agreement that uplifts the entire community. Our intent is to contribute to a stronger economy, preserve the cultural legacy of our city, and ensure long-term benefits for future generations – without imposing additional tax burdens on local residents. As has been the case since 1973, we are engaging in this process with honesty, transparency, and a heartfelt commitment to San Antonio’s success.”
The Spurs will continue to call the Frost Bank Center home until their current lease expires in 2032. The Frost Bank Center, which opened its doors in 2002, has served as the team’s home court following their previous tenure at the Alamodome.
