Philadelphia 76ers executives continue to express confidence about re-signing Quentin Grimes, despite ongoing negotiations and a sluggish restricted free agent market. Keith Smith of Spotrac reported that a Sixers front office member said, “We want Quentin back. We believe he wants to be back. We all saw how great he was after he got to us last year. Hopefully we can get something done.”

Grimes, 25, turned heads in his half-season with Philadelphia after arriving from the Dallas Mavericks. Over 28 games, the 6-foot-5 guard averaged 21.9 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 4.5 assists while shooting 37% from three-point range, establishing himself as a core contributor.

While president Daryl Morey described Grimes’ contract as “the last piece of business” for the offseason, he declined to offer specifics when speaking with reporters this week. Morey added, “We hope to work things out. I don’t have more detail.”

Smith’s reporting also highlighted the Sixers’ approach to a challenging offseason. With the team constrained by luxury tax aprons and Grimes’ restricted status, Philadelphia prioritized value signings and depth.

A 76ers coach told Smith, “Because of our position with the aprons and Quentin as a free agent, we had to work around the edges. We feel like we got great value in the draft and free agency.”

Philadelphia selected V.J. Edgecombe and Johni Broome in the draft, and later added Trendon Watford, Jabari Walker, Dominick Barlow, and Hunter Sallis in free agency. The coach described these acquisitions as “championship-level depth” despite limited spending power.

The restricted free agent market has been unusually slow this summer, with other young players like Jonathan Kuminga and Josh Giddey still awaiting contracts. That lack of urgency across the league has allowed Philadelphia to negotiate without significant external pressure.

At this point, the options remain clear: the Sixers and Grimes could agree on a multi-year contract, he could sign the $8.7 million qualifying offer and hit unrestricted free agency in 2026, or talks could continue deeper into the offseason.
