Pelicans rookies Jeremiah Fears and Derik Queen gave fans and scouts a glimpse of their promising potential during Summer League action in Las Vegas, but both also left clear areas for growth, according to Rod Walker of NOLA.com.
Fears, a dynamic guard, impressed with his blazing speed, tight handle, and explosive athleticism, consistently creating separation and breaking down defenders.
His quick first step and ability to push the pace stood out in transition. However, despite his flair and confidence with the ball, his efficiency left something to be desired.
He struggled to convert at the rim and connected on just 18.2% of his three-point attempts, suggesting he’ll need to polish his finishing and refine his shooting mechanics to become a more complete offensive threat at the next level.
On the other hand, Derik Queen, the skilled big man, displayed the type of offensive versatility that’s rare for players his size.
He showed soft touch around the basket, flashed comfortable range, and perhaps most impressively, showcased high-level passing instincts that allowed him to operate as a playmaker from the post.
His ability to read the floor and find open teammates added an extra layer to his offensive profile.
Unfortunately, Queen’s Summer League campaign was cut short due to a torn scapholunate ligament in his wrist, a setback that required surgery and will sideline him until at least October.
While both players offered plenty of reasons for optimism, their respective performances also outlined clear development priorities.
For Fears, it’s about improving efficiency and decision-making; for Queen, it’s about staying healthy and continuing to adapt to the speed and physicality of the NBA.
Despite the rough edges, the Pelicans remain encouraged by what they’ve seen. Both rookies bring distinct, high-upside skill sets that could be impactful in time, especially with the right development and support.
