Cooper Flagg’s highly anticipated NBA Summer League debut Thursday night drew massive attention, delivering the fourth-largest audience in ESPN Summer League history.
According to Sports Media Watch, the Dallas Mavericks’ 87–85 win over the Los Angeles Lakers averaged 955,000 viewers on ESPN, peaking at 1.12 million. Only the Summer League debuts of Victor Wembanyama, Zion Williamson, and the 2017 Celtics-Lakers matchup drew larger audiences.
Flagg, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, struggled to find his shooting touch in his first professional appearance. He finished with 10 points on 5-for-21 shooting, missing all five of his three-point attempts, but contributed six rebounds, four assists, three steals, and a decisive block in the final minute.
The game, played at a sold-out Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, saw the Mavericks take the lead for good after Flagg’s late defensive play set up Ryan Nembhard’s clutch three-pointer. Nembhard led Dallas with 21 points, while Miles Kelly scored 17 and Gabe McGlothan added nine.
The Mavericks shot 43% from the field and limited the Lakers to 36.7%, using defensive stops in the closing minutes to seal the win. Dallas improved to 1–0 in Summer League play and will play again on Saturday.
For Los Angeles, Cole Swider led all scorers with 22 points, hitting six of nine three-pointers. Dalton Knecht added 15 points, and DJ Steward chipped in 14. Bronny James, in his second Summer League appearance, scored eight points on 2-for-8 shooting in 20 minutes.
Flagg’s debut drew comparisons to the high-profile first games of Wembanyama and Williamson, which each topped over a million viewers.
