Both the Phoenix Suns and New York Knicks are in the market for a high-level assistant coach and have reportedly set their sights on Darvin Ham, according to Marc Stein.

The two franchises have shown interest in trying to recruit Ham away from his current role with the Milwaukee Bucks, where he returned this offseason as the lead assistant under head coach Doc Rivers.

However, Stein reports that the Bucks are “determined to keep” Ham on staff, unless he’s offered another opportunity to become a head coach elsewhere – something that would represent a clear promotion.

From Milwaukee’s perspective, a move to the Suns or Knicks would be considered lateral, since Ham is already serving as the Bucks’ top assistant.

Stein also notes that the organization holds Ham in high regard, emphasizing that Milwaukee “loves having Ham back” after his two-year tenure as the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers.

During his time in L.A., Ham led the team to a Western Conference Finals appearance in 2023, and though his stint ended earlier than expected, his experience and leadership are valued assets in Milwaukee’s coaching structure.

Unless a head coaching vacancy arises elsewhere, it appears the Bucks intend to do everything they can to keep Ham on board, viewing him as a key figure in their pursuit of another championship.
