The Washington Wizards are planning to bring back Anthony Gill on a veteran minimum deal after waiving him Sunday ahead of his contract guarantee deadline, according to Josh Robbins of The Athletic.
Gill, 32, was released to avoid guaranteeing his $2.55 million salary for the 2025-26 season. The move cleared a small amount of cap space while allowing Washington flexibility in filling out the roster.
Despite being waived, the forward remains highly regarded within the organization for his professionalism, leadership, and influence on younger players.
Robbins reported that while Gill will not be transitioning to a front-office role, the Wizards expect him to return later in the offseason as their 15th man on a veteran’s minimum salary.
Gill first joined Washington in 2020 after several seasons overseas, notably with Khimki Moscow in the EuroLeague. Over five years with the Wizards, he appeared in 230 regular-season games, averaging 3.4 points and 1.7 rebounds in limited minutes.
In the 2024-25 season, Gill played in 51 games and logged a career-low 7.8 minutes per night, contributing 2.5 points per game on 48.9% shooting from the field.
His best statistical season came as a rookie, but his value to the team has been more intangible — providing steady veteran guidance during Washington’s ongoing rebuild.
Gill’s lone playoff experience with the Wizards came in 2021, when the team was eliminated in the first round. He has otherwise served primarily as a depth option and locker-room leader.
