Negotiations between the Philadelphia 76ers and restricted free agent guard Quentin Grimes have seen little progress, according to reporting from Kelly Iko of The Athletic.
Iko tweeted Saturday that “to this point, there has been little to no movement with restricted free agent guard Quentin Grimes and the Philadelphia 76ers, league sources tell myself and @Tjonesonthenba. The two sides are hoping to continue communication in the coming days.”
Philadelphia extended a qualifying offer to Grimes earlier this offseason, making him a restricted free agent. The offer is worth $8.7 million and gives the 76ers the right to match any contract he agrees to with another team.
Grimes, 25, arrived in Philadelphia at the February trade deadline in exchange for Caleb Martin, who went to the Dallas Mavericks. Since joining the 76ers, he averaged 21.9 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 4.5 assists across 28 games, playing 33.7 minutes per night while shooting 46.9% from the field and 37.3% from three-point range.
He is currently entering the final year of his rookie-scale contract, a four-year, $11.1 million deal he signed after being selected 25th overall in the 2021 NBA Draft. Grimes was initially drafted by the Los Angeles Clippers before being traded to the New York Knicks, where he spent two and a half seasons.
The Sixers, who finished 13th in the Eastern Conference last season with a 24–58 record, are in the middle of a significant roster overhaul. They drafted Baylor guard V.J. Edgecombe with the third overall pick in June.
As of now, both sides are expected to keep the dialogue open in hopes of reaching an agreement before the summer progresses.
