Oklahoma City Thunder center Isaiah Hartenstein gave rare insight into head coach Mark Daigneault’s unconventional methods during a recent appearance on The Rich Eisen Show. Hartenstein described the coach as “a great motivator” with a “very good-crazy” approach that resonated with the players throughout their historic 2024–25 season.
Speaking with host Rich Eisen, Hartenstein revealed that Daigneault often showed the team videos of animals hunting before games or practices, drawing parallels to basketball situations. “Weird stuff like that,” Hartenstein explained, adding that it somehow translated into focus and intensity on the court.
The center praised Daigneault’s demeanor, noting his “stoic” presence that instilled confidence and emphasized a “zero-zero mentality.” According to Hartenstein, the coach constantly reminded players not to get too high or too low and to stay locked into the present moment.
Hartenstein, who started 53 regular-season games for Oklahoma City after joining the team from New York, averaged a career-high 11.2 points and 10.7 rebounds per game while shooting 58.1 percent from the field. He also contributed 3.8 assists per game, showcasing his versatility in Daigneault’s system.
The Thunder’s campaign culminated in a dominant playoff run, capped by a seven-game NBA Finals victory over the Indiana Pacers. At just 25.6 years old on average, the Thunder became the second-youngest team in league history to capture a championship. Their record-setting point differential during the regular season and their commanding Game 1 playoff win over Memphis reflected the relentless mentality Daigneault instilled.
Hartenstein also lauded the coach’s in-game adjustments, calling him “one of my favorite coaches to play for.”
For a team that outscored opponents by nearly 13 points per game and won 84 games combined during the regular season and playoffs, Daigneault’s unconventional methods appear to have paid off. Hartenstein’s account highlights how the Thunder’s focus, preparation, and trust in their coach propelled them to their first NBA title since 1979.
