Jason Kidd and the Dallas Mavericks are expected to finalize a contract extension ahead of the 2025-26 NBA season, solidifying Kidd’s future with the franchise as head coach.

This comes after the Mavericks declined the New York Knicks’ formal request to interview Kidd for their head coaching vacancy – a move that reaffirms Dallas’ commitment to him. Kidd was widely regarded as the Knicks’ top target for the job.

The coach had previously agreed to a two-year extension with the Mavericks in May 2024, when his name surfaced as a potential candidate for the Los Angeles Lakers’ coaching position.

That extension came as part of the Mavericks’ efforts to maintain continuity amid external interest in their coach.

Hired in 2021 to succeed Rick Carlisle, Kidd has grown into a central figure for the organization, particularly as general manager Nico Harrison faces criticism from the fanbase, most notably due to the controversial trade of superstar Luka Doncic to the Lakers.

This offseason, the Mavericks’ coaching staff has undergone significant turnover.

Lead assistant Sean Sweeney departed to join the San Antonio Spurs, and Alex Jensen accepted a head coaching position at the University of Utah.

There is also speculation that Jared Dudley may leave the organization. To address the staff shakeup, Kidd is hoping to bring in veteran coach Frank Vogel as Sweeney’s replacement.

Despite the personnel changes and internal tension, Dallas is expected to secure Kidd’s long-term presence on the sidelines, reinforcing his role as a stabilizing force during a transitional period for the franchise.
