The Portland Trail Blazers explored multiple trade scenarios involving center Deandre Ayton before reaching a contract buyout agreement, according to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype.

Scotto reported that while several teams expressed interest, Portland was unwilling to take back any multi-year contracts. That condition complicated efforts to match Ayton’s $35 million salary, effectively ending trade discussions.

The 26-year-old officially hit free agency after finalizing the buyout. He now becomes one of the top frontcourt options on the open market.

Ayton had one year remaining on a four-year, $133 million deal signed in 2022. Portland’s decision clears the way for more minutes and development opportunities for younger big men, including Duop Reath and Jabari Walker.

Ayton averaged 14.4 points and 10.2 rebounds in 40 appearances during the 2024-25 campaign. He shot 56.6% from the field and recorded 27 double-doubles.

Originally selected No. 1 overall by the Phoenix Suns in the 2018 NBA Draft, Ayton played five seasons in Arizona before being traded to Portland in 2023. He helped lead the Suns to the 2021 NBA Finals and has logged 45 career playoff games.

The 7-footer owns career averages of 16.4 points and 10.5 rebounds on 59.7% shooting. His postseason numbers include 15.9 points and 10.5 boards per game while converting nearly 63% from the floor.

Portland finished the 2024-25 season with a 36–46 record, tied for 11th in the Western Conference. The franchise is in the midst of a rebuild centered around Scoot Henderson, Shaedon Sharpe, and its recent draft picks.

Ayton’s availability is expected to draw strong interest from contenders in need of size and athleticism. The Los Angeles Lakers, who lack reliable depth at center, are among the teams closely monitoring the situation.
