The Minnesota Timberwolves have taken a major step toward solidifying their frontcourt by locking in Naz Reid with a five-year, $125 million contract, ensuring one of their key contributors remains in place for the long term.

With Reid’s deal secured, the team’s focus now shifts to pursuing another significant addition – power forward Julius Randle.

Randle currently holds a $30.9 million player option for the upcoming season. League insiders suggest there’s mutual interest between Randle and the Timberwolves in finalizing a long-term agreement.

There are a couple of pathways to getting that done: Randle could opt into his current deal and then agree to an extension, or he could decline the option altogether and sign a brand-new contract – a move similar to the one Reid just made.

In either scenario, the Timberwolves are expected to seek a way to reduce Randle’s cap hit from the current $30.9 million.

Doing so would help Minnesota manage its payroll more strategically, potentially staying under the NBA’s second luxury tax apron and preserving flexibility.

This could also create financial room to re-sign key role players, such as Nickeil Alexander-Walker, without exceeding tax thresholds.
