Despite being on Kevin Durant’s preferred destination list, the San Antonio Spurs are opting for caution, not aggression, in trade talks this summer.
Insiders say the team is strategically preserving draft assets and cap flexibility for a blockbuster move that aligns with their long-term timeline.
According to NBA insider Shams Charania, discussed on the Pat McAfee Show, the Spurs aren’t acting like a franchise focused solely on “win-now.”
“From my understanding right now, the Spurs have not been the aggressive team for Kevin Durant,” Charania explained. “The Spurs have had a level of interest, I mean it’s Kevin Durant, who wouldn’t? But their timeline compared to the assets and potentially what it would take to go get Kevin Durant, they’re just not on that time that Miami may be on.”
While the Miami Heat and the Houston Rockets are reportedly more actively pursuing Durant, San Antonio is taking a step back, not out of disinterest, but out of strategic patience.
Durant has played 17 seasons for 4 teams, including the Thunder and Nets. He has averaged 27.2 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 4.4 assists in 1,123 regular-season games.
He was selected to play in 14 All-Star games. He has won the Rookie of the Year award, 1 MVP award, 2 Finals MVP awards, and 2 NBA championships.
