The San Antonio Spurs are reportedly set to add a notable name to their revamped coaching staff.
According to league sources cited by Marc Stein of The Stein Line, former NBA player and veteran coach Corliss Williamson is expected to be hired as an assistant coach under new head coach Mitch Johnson.
Williamson brings a wealth of basketball experience to the table, both as a former standout player and as a seasoned coach.
A collegiate star at the University of Arkansas, he helped lead the Razorbacks to a national championship in 1994.
His success continued at the professional level, where he carved out a 12-year NBA career.
From 1995 to 2007, Williamson played in over 800 regular-season games for four franchises – the Sacramento Kings, Toronto Raptors, Detroit Pistons, and Philadelphia 76ers.
Known for his toughness and low-post scoring, he was named NBA Sixth Man of the Year in 2002 and won an NBA title with the Pistons in 2004.
After retiring as a player in 2007, Williamson quickly transitioned into coaching. He began at the college level, working with programs in his native Arkansas before transitioning to the NBA ranks.
Over the years, he’s held assistant coaching roles with several NBA teams, including the Sacramento Kings, Orlando Magic, and Phoenix Suns.
Most recently, Williamson spent the past two seasons on Chris Finch’s coaching staff with the Minnesota Timberwolves, helping guide the team to playoff appearances and playing a key role in player development and frontcourt strategy.
Williamson will join the Spurs, bringing experience and a winning background as the team begins a new phase under Mitch Johnson.
