Jordan Ott, officially introduced as the Phoenix Suns’ new head coach on Tuesday, delivered a passionate pledge to revitalize the team. Speaking at a press conference, Ott emphasized hard work and player development as cornerstones of his vision.
“I’m honored to be the next head coach of the Phoenix Suns,” Ott said. “We’re going to demand that you work.”
Ott’s appointment follows a disappointing 2024-25 season, where the Suns finished 36-46 and missed the playoffs. General Manager Brian Gregory praised Ott’s 12-year NBA assistant coaching tenure, highlighting his “forward-thinking offensive schemes” and “aggressive defensive style.”
“Jordan stood out in every stage of our extensive search,” Gregory stated. “He’s the clear choice to lead us forward.”
Ott, previously with the Cleveland Cavaliers, outlined a fast-paced, cutting-heavy offensive philosophy. “We’re going to play earlier in the clock and move bodies,” he told reporters, emphasizing efficiency and extra possessions.
Defensively, Ott aims for aggression and connectivity. “We’ll communicate and give all-out effort,” he said, citing playoff teams as inspiration for disrupting opponents.
The Suns’ passionate fan base was a key factor in Ott’s hiring. “Fitting into the Phoenix community was very important,” Gregory noted. “Our fans deserve the best.”
Ott expressed gratitude to players who shaped his career, humorously recalling Patrick Beverley’s intensity. “I can still hear Pat Bev barking in my ear,” he said, crediting players for making him a better coach.
Devin Booker’s support was a significant boost. Ott recalled a draft workout where Booker’s competitiveness stood out. “We left knowing he was different,” Ott said. “My job is to help him find solutions.”
Despite the Suns’ recent coaching turnover, Ott dismissed concerns about job security. “I’m not here to look back,” he declared. “My sole energy is moving this group forward.”
Ott’s player development background will guide his approach. “High character and great professional habits are key,” he said, signaling his focus for upcoming draft workouts.
On roster decisions, Gregory emphasized collaboration with Ott. “We’ll work together daily to align our style of play with personnel,” he said.
Ott’s vision extends beyond the court. “Relationships are built through trust with time,” he said, aiming to connect personally with players to elevate their game.
As the Suns prepare for the 2025-26 season, Ott’s blend of intensity and relatability has sparked optimism. “We can make that jump,” he said, promising a systematic rebuild to restore Phoenix’s playoff hopes.
