The New York Knicks’ potential pursuit of Jason Kidd could come at a cost, as the Dallas Mavericks head coach remains under contract following a Finals run and recent extension.

According to NBA insider Marc Stein, the Knicks would “have to surrender some form of future draft compensation” to secure Kidd’s release from his current deal with Dallas.

Kidd, who guided the Mavericks to the 2024 NBA Finals, signed an extension during that playoff stretch, reinforcing his standing within the organization. His continued presence on the sidelines in Dallas has become a key part of the franchise’s recent resurgence.

New York, meanwhile, is conducting a coaching search after parting ways with Tom Thibodeau, and Kidd has emerged as a candidate of interest. ESPN’s Brian Windhorst reported there is “mutual intrigue” between Kidd and the Knicks, though no formal request has yet been made.

There is a belief within the Mavericks organization, Stein noted, that the Knicks may ultimately decide against making an official inquiry, given the complexities of extracting a coach mid-contract.

Kidd’s prior experience with both the Knicks and Nets as a player — and later as a coach in Brooklyn — could make him an appealing option for Madison Square Garden’s decision-makers. His familiarity with the New York media landscape and market scrutiny is seen as a valuable asset.
