Trade speculation around Kevin Durant is intensifying with multiple insiders pointing to the San Antonio Spurs as a potential landing spot ahead of the 2025 NBA Draft.
Arizona Sports’ John Gambadoro reported that there is “some interest” from Durant’s side in joining the Spurs, citing sources close to the situation.
Gambadoro suggested the 35-year-old forward views San Antonio—featuring De’Aaron Fox, Victor Wembanyama, and rookie guard Stephon Castle—as an appealing destination.
The Spurs missed the playoffs for a sixth consecutive year but showed signs of progress following Fox’s midseason arrival and the continued rise of Wembanyama as a defensive centerpiece.
With Phoenix missing the postseason and finishing 11th in the Western Conference at 36–46, the franchise is considering dramatic roster changes following the dismissal of head coach Mike Budenholzer.
According to Gambadoro, a trade involving Durant is “expected” to occur before the draft to allow inclusion of 2025 picks, with a deal likely being finalized in the days leading up to the event.
He floated the idea of Phoenix acquiring Devin Vassell and potentially taking back Harrison Barnes’ contract in a multi-player package.
The report comes days after ESPN’s Brian Windhorst said he was “98 percent sure” Durant would not return to the Suns next season.
Windhorst added that interest in Durant will vary depending on whether teams view him as a short-term rental or plan to offer an extension, which the forward is believed to seek.
Durant averaged 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 4.2 assists over 62 games in the 2024–25 campaign and remains under contract.
The Suns’ recent struggles, including early exits and internal instability, have prompted front office reevaluation after two straight years without playoff wins.
Trading Durant would signify a full pivot away from the franchise’s recent star-driven roster construction, which also included Bradley Beal and Devin Booker in previous years.
For San Antonio, acquiring Durant would accelerate their rebuild under newly promoted head coach Mitch Johnson, who replaced Gregg Popovich following the latter’s retirement last month.
