When Michael Winger and Will Dawkins took over the Washington Wizards in 2023, they were given full license to rebuild.
After gutting the roster, Washington endured a franchise-worst 15–67 season and picked second in a 2024 draft lacking top-end talent.
They landed Alex Sarr and used extra picks on Bub Carrington and Kyshawn George, but still lacked a true franchise cornerstone.
The 2024–25 season was another tough one. The team leaned fully into development, trading away veterans like Deni Avdija, Jonas Valanciunas, and Kyle Kuzma.
Outside of Jordan Poole, their most-used players were all under 22. Not surprisingly, they had the NBA’s worst net rating and finished 18–64.
Despite their record, a late win and lottery misfortune dropped them to No. 6 in the draft, likely out of range for top prospects like Cooper Flagg and Dylan Harper.
Now, Winger and Dawkins must get creative – and stay patient – as the rebuild continues.
