According to Shams Charania of ESPN, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander will be officially announced as the 2024-25 NBA Most Valuable Player later today.

The Oklahoma City Thunder guard beat out fellow finalists Nikola Jokic and Giannis Antetokounmpo, both former MVP winners, to earn the honor for the first time in his career.

Gilgeous-Alexander led the NBA in scoring with 32.7 points per game, averaging 6.4 assists, 5.0 rebounds, 1.7 steals, and 1.0 blocks on 51.9% shooting in 76 games.

Only Michael Jordan has posted similar numbers in a season, during his 1988 and 1991 MVP campaigns.

Beyond individual stats, SGA helped lead the Thunder to an NBA-best 68-14 record, becoming the 10th player in league history to lead the league in scoring for a 60+ win team.

Though Jokic averaged a near triple-double and had a strong case, Denver finished fourth in the West and was eliminated by OKC in the second round.

Antetokounmpo also had an excellent season but was a distant third in voting due to Milwaukee’s 48-win campaign.

Gilgeous-Alexander becomes the third MVP in Thunder history, joining Kevin Durant (2014) and Russell Westbrook (2017).

He’s now eligible for a four-year, $294 million extension, and if he waits until 2026, he could sign for a record-setting five-year, $380 million extension, per ESPN’s Bobby Marks.
