The Oklahoma City Thunder have made it clear that their confidence in Chet Holmgren and Jalen Williams remains unchanged despite the disappointing end to their season.
During exit interviews, head coach Mark Daigneault and MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander publicly voiced their support for both young stars, with Holmgren receiving particular backing after a difficult Western Conference Finals against San Antonio.
While observers have criticized Holmgren’s performance in the series, those inside the organization continue to view him as a foundational piece of the franchise.
According to SI.com’s Rylan Stiles, the Thunder expect both Holmgren and Williams to remain central to the team’s future as their rookie-scale maximum extensions begin next season.
Gilgeous-Alexander stressed the importance of Holmgren to Oklahoma City’s rise.
“Before Chet was here, we weren’t who we are today. We couldn’t have the success we have today.”
The Thunder star added that the team’s ceiling is closely tied to the development of both Holmgren and Williams.
“When he’s the best version of himself, we’re the best version of ourself, and it’s no secret.”
Gilgeous-Alexander expressed complete confidence that both players will bounce back from any setbacks.
“We need them to be the best version of themselves for us to be the best version of ourselves. And I have confidence that they will be that.”
He also praised their commitment and work ethic.
“Those guys work way too hard for them and love the game way too much for that not to be the case.”
