Ty Jerome credits his breakout 2024–25 campaign to two crucial factors: maintaining good health and playing under newly named NBA Coach of the Year Kenny Atkinson.
In a recent interview with Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, the Cavaliers guard emphasized how Atkinson’s coaching style has allowed him to thrive.
“Kenny empowers me to be aggressive every time I step on the court and to play my game,” Jerome explained. “I’ve got the ultimate green light. He trusts his guards to be yourself with unlimited confidence. When good players are playing with confidence, good stuff usually happens.”
Jerome’s confidence translated into production. He finished third in the voting for the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year, signaling a significant leap in performance and profile.
With free agency approaching, he’s widely expected to command a meaningful raise. However, Cleveland’s financial situation may complicate his return.
As Scotto notes, the Cavaliers are projected to be operating deep into the second tax apron before even factoring in a potential new contract for Jerome.
That cap pressure has led some rival executives to speculate that Cleveland may either lose Jerome in free agency or be forced to make cost-cutting moves elsewhere on the roster to retain him.
Despite the financial uncertainties, Jerome made it clear that his preference is to stay in Cleveland, where he feels supported and valued.
“I think I have an amazing situation here with a coaching staff that empowers me and a team that empowers me,” he told Scotto.
“… Everyone wants to see each other succeed and empower everyone. That’s really rare. When you have that in the NBA, you don’t want to take it for granted. Yes, people want to get paid for sure, and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t, but when you have that, you don’t want to take it for granted.”
Whether the Cavaliers can keep him in the fold remains to be seen, but it’s clear that both player and coach have found a mutual rhythm that has elevated Jerome’s game.
