The Phoenix Suns are actively engaged in their search for a new head coach following the departure of Mike Budenholzer, and indications around the league suggest the team may be leaning toward hiring a first-time head coach.

However, the Suns have yet to narrow their focus, instead opting for a broad and inclusive approach that spans a diverse range of candidates, including current assistant coaches still involved in the NBA playoffs.

With newly appointed general manager Brian Gregory now helping shape the direction of the franchise, there is also openness within the organization to bringing in a coach with previous head coaching experience. This has led to the emergence of several notable names as potential candidates.

Among them is New Orleans Pelicans assistant James Borrego, who brings a solid coaching résumé. Borrego served as head coach of the Charlotte Hornets from 2018 to 2022, where he was credited with fostering young talent and implementing a modern offensive system.

Before that, he held the role of interim head coach for the Orlando Magic during part of the 2014–15 season, demonstrating early on his leadership capability.

Another strong contender is Dave Joerger, currently an assistant with the Milwaukee Bucks. Joerger’s coaching career includes successful stints as the head coach of the Memphis Grizzlies from 2013 to 2016 and the Sacramento Kings from 2016 to 2019.

Known for his defensive acumen and ability to adapt to different rosters, Joerger’s experience could provide the kind of stability and tactical insight the Suns may value as they look to return to title contention.

While the Suns are considering fresh faces, they’re not ruling out seasoned minds either.
