Top basketball prospect Alijah Arenas has been released from the hospital just one week after a life-threatening car crash in Los Angeles, according to a statement from his family.
The five-star USC commit, who was placed in a medically induced coma following the April accident, is now recovering at home under close observation.
“We are grateful to share that Alijah Arenas has been released from the hospital and is now resting comfortably under close watch,” the Arenas and Govan family said in a statement.
“While his journey to full recovery is just beginning, his spirit remains strong, and he is surrounded by love and support.”
The 18-year-old was seriously injured when his Tesla Cybertruck struck a tree and fire hydrant around 4:55 a.m. before bursting into flames.
Emergency crews from the Los Angeles Fire Department arrived to find the vehicle engulfed, with Arenas already pulled from the wreckage.
Eyewitnesses at the scene described thick smoke and a desperate race to get Arenas to safety before the fire spread.
Initially intubated and in critical condition, Arenas later regained consciousness and was able to communicate by writing — with his first concern being whether anyone else had been hurt.
Doctors confirmed that he sustained no broken bones, a remarkable outcome given the impact of the crash and the fire that followed.
His parents, former NBA All-Star Gilbert Arenas and reality TV personality Laura Govan, remained by his side throughout his hospital stay.
They continue to request privacy as the family focuses on Alijah’s recovery and long-term healing.
The crash prompted an outpouring of support from the basketball community, with fans, players, and coaches across the country sending messages of encouragement.
Arenas’ release marks a critical step in what the family described as a “road ahead with faith and determination.”
The highly touted guard, who had recently committed to USC, was expected to be a cornerstone of the Trojans’ future roster.
While there is no current timeline for his return to basketball activities, the family expressed gratitude for the progress made so far.
