The Phoenix Suns are expected to take a measured approach in their search for a new head coach, signaling a potential shift in strategy after back-to-back quick exits for veteran coaches.
Unlike previous hiring cycles, where the Suns brought in experienced, championship-winning coaches like Frank Vogel and Mike Budenholzer – both of whom lasted only one season – the organization is now open to bringing in a fresh face, possibly someone without prior head coaching experience.
League sources told The Stein Line that Phoenix is strongly considering a range of candidates who have served as assistants or associate head coaches, many of whom have earned reputations as rising coaching talents.
Among the names to watch are Cleveland Cavaliers associate head coach Johnnie Bryant and Houston Rockets assistant Royal Ivey, both of whom have been linked to head coaching opportunities in recent years.
Also reportedly on Phoenix’s radar are Jared Dudley and Sean Sweeney, both of whom are currently on the Dallas Mavericks’ coaching staff.
Dudley, a former Suns player, has strong ties to the organization and is seen as a potential culture fit. Sweeney, meanwhile, has garnered respect for his defensive coaching and player development work alongside Jason Kidd.
Two other names that had been floated in coaching circles are Chauncey Billups and Willie Green.
However, Billups recently agreed to a contract extension with the Portland Trail Blazers, removing him from immediate contention, and Green is widely expected to be retained by the New Orleans Pelicans despite speculation about his future.
As the Suns aim to build long-term stability and reestablish a winning identity, they appear to be leaning toward a fresh approach, potentially entrusting their roster to a first-time head coach with strong developmental credentials and a clear vision for the future.
