Despite being a six-time All-Star and one of the league’s fiercest competitors, Jimmy Butler still hasn’t captured that elusive NBA championship.
But as the playoffs begin, Butler’s focus isn’t solely on chasing his ring.
In a candid conversation with Sam Amick of The Athletic, the veteran revealed that his motivation this postseason is rooted in something bigger than personal achievement – he’s playing to help his veteran Warriors teammates, Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, reach the mountaintop once again.
“Look, I’m not gonna say I’m not hungry, but I’m doing this for Steph (Curry),” Butler told Amick.
“I’m doing this for Dray (Draymond Green). I’m doing this for these guys. As much as I want to win a championship, I want Dray to win another one. I want Steph to win another one. I know I ain’t got mine yet, but they deserve it. They’ve been putting this city and this organization on their back for a very long time, and I’m glad that I can be here to try and do something special.”
Rather than being driven solely by his desire to check a box on his legacy, Butler is embracing a role where he contributes to the legacy of others.
It’s a rare sentiment in a league often centered around individual accolades, and it shows just how deeply Butler has bought into the Warriors’ culture and the pursuit of something meaningful together.
