Houston Rockets guard Amen Thompson has rapidly ascended in his sophomore campaign, positioning himself as one of the NBA’s most surprising and impactful talents of the 2024–25 season.

No longer just a promising prospect, Thompson has evolved into a serious contender for several prestigious honors, including Most Improved Player, All-Defensive Team selection, and even Defensive Player of the Year.

His all-around growth, especially on the defensive side of the floor, has turned heads across the league and solidified his place as a foundational piece in Houston’s long-term plans.

In a detailed profile by Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated, the strides Thompson has made are explored through the eyes of those closest to the team, none more vocal than head coach Ime Udoka.

Udoka, drawing a powerful comparison from his previous coaching days, emphasized the rare and instinctual brilliance Thompson brings on defense:

“When I coached Kyrie (Irving, in Boston), you would be wowed at something he did offensively every night,” Udoka said. “It’s the same thing with Amen on the defensive end. You can’t teach what he does. … He can be a top 15-level player. All-NBA level. People are seeing flashes. We see more.”

What Irving brought with creativity and flair on offense, Thompson mirrors with disruptive brilliance and versatility on defense. The Rockets may still be rebuilding, but with Amen leading the charge, the foundation is looking increasingly elite.
