Gregg Popovich, legendary head coach of the San Antonio Spurs, experienced a medical scare earlier this week while dining at a restaurant.

Popovich, who has spent much of the current NBA season away from coaching duties due to recovery from a stroke, was reportedly transported to a hospital on Tuesday evening after a health-related incident, according to initial coverage from TMZ, with confirmation provided by Shams Charania of ESPN.

Per TMZ’s account, emergency responders were dispatched following reports of a guest who had lost consciousness during dinner.

Popovich was seen being taken from the scene on a stretcher and was then placed into an ambulance for immediate medical attention.

Fortunately, the incident was described as non-life-threatening, and by the time he was en route to the hospital, Popovich was said to be conscious, alert, and able to communicate.

Charania later updated that Spurs legend has since returned home and is recovering well.

Assistant coach Mitch Johnson stepped into head coaching responsibilities earlier in the season after Popovich suffered a stroke in November.

Although Popovich hasn’t resumed his full-time coaching role since then, he did reconnect with the team in February, speaking with players and sharing a hopeful public message about possibly returning to the sidelines in the future.

Whether that return will materialize remains uncertain. At 76, Popovich holds the distinction of being the oldest head coach in NBA history, surpassing former record-holder Hubie Brown, who coached into his early 70s.
