As Joe Dumars prepares to take the reins in New Orleans, one of his first major tasks will reportedly involve having some “very candid conversations” with Zion Williamson regarding his role, expectations, and future with the franchise.
Williamson, who put up impressive numbers when on the floor – 24.6 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 5.3 assists in 28.6 minutes per game – only appeared in 30 contests during the 2024–25 season, continuing a troubling pattern of limited availability.
NBA insider Shams Charania highlighted the need for a serious discussion between Dumars and the former No. 1 overall pick, stating on NBA Today, “They’re going to have to have a sitdown eventually.”
This season, Williamson was suspended for one game after being late for a team flight, raising further concerns about his professionalism and commitment – areas Dumars is reportedly determined to address directly and firmly.
According to reports, Dumars is expected to hold Williamson to a high standard, both on and off the court, as the team looks to turn a corner competitively.
Meanwhile, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst has noted that Williamson would draw “significant interest” from other teams if the Pelicans made him available via trade, suggesting that the upcoming offseason could be a pivotal crossroads for the player and the franchise.
