The New York Knicks are expected to be among several teams expressing strong interest in trading for Kevin Durant this offseason, marking a potential second pursuit after their failed attempt to sign him in 2019.

Back then, Durant chose to join Kyrie Irving and sign with the Brooklyn Nets, bypassing the Knicks in a move that left many puzzled.

Brian Windhorst, speaking on The Stephen A. Smith Show, reflected on that decision, saying:

“I do think the concept of the Knicks is an interesting one. Now, in my opinion, I’ve never understood why Kevin Durant didn’t go to the Knicks in 2019, instead [he] went to the Nets.”

As the 2025 NBA playoffs unfold, Windhorst added that the outcome could significantly influence how the trade market for Durant takes shape.

Though Durant has publicly stated he wants to have control over where he ends up next, the newly implemented NBA collective bargaining agreement could limit how much say he truly has this time around.

According to Shams Charania, the Phoenix Suns are expected to work with Durant and his longtime business manager, Rich Kleiman, to facilitate a trade, suggesting Durant will still have some input in the process.

However, the evolving salary cap landscape may make it harder for stars to dictate destinations as freely as before.

Charania also reported that several other teams – including the Houston Rockets, Minnesota Timberwolves, San Antonio Spurs, Miami Heat, and of course the New York Knicks – are expected to be in the mix for the 2-time Finals MVP should the Suns engage in serious trade talks.

Durant’s offseason could become one of the biggest storylines in the league, especially if a team like the Knicks finally gets the superstar they’ve long coveted.
