The future of James Jones as the lead decision-maker in the Phoenix Suns’ basketball operations department is currently uncertain as the franchise heads into what could be a pivotal offseason.
Jones’s contract is set to expire at the end of June, and league sources believe that team owner Mat Ishbia is seriously evaluating alternative candidates to potentially take over the role.
Jones, a former NBA player and respected executive, has been part of the Suns’ front office since 2017. He was promoted to head of basketball operations in 2019, replacing Ryan McDonough.
Under his leadership, the Suns enjoyed a resurgence, including a trip to the NBA Finals in 2021 and a strong regular season in 2021-22. However, expectations have significantly shifted since then.
During the 2024-25 season, multiple sources told The Athletic that both Mat Ishbia and team CEO Josh Bartelstein increasingly took control of key trade discussions and broader organizational decisions, signaling a shift in how basketball operations are being managed within the franchise.
This growing involvement from ownership and executive leadership has raised questions about Jones’s authority and long-term role.
Bartelstein’s position within the Suns is also under consideration moving forward, adding another layer of uncertainty to the team’s leadership structure.
Despite a star-studded roster and one of the league’s highest payrolls – $214 million in salaries and $152 million in luxury tax – the Suns finished the season with a disappointing 36-46 record and failed to even qualify for the Play-In Tournament.
The underwhelming performance has intensified scrutiny across all levels of the organization and could prompt major changes in the front office before the start of the 2025-26 season.
