San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama is currently dealing with a health setback related to a deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a condition that has cast uncertainty over his availability for international competition this summer.
While Wembanyama had previously expressed his desire to suit up for the French national team at the upcoming EuroBasket 2025 tournament, he now admits that his participation is far from guaranteed.
“I don’t know if it’s realistic, there are a lot of uncertainties,” Wembanyama said. “…I obviously want to play in every competition with the French team.”
The 21-year-old phenom, who remains a central figure in France’s long-term basketball plans, acknowledged the need to weigh his decision carefully.
Though eager to represent his country, he said he would take the necessary time to assess his physical condition and recovery before making a final commitment.
Wembanyama is also mindful of the deadline by which he must inform the French national team of his availability. For now, however, he is prioritizing his health and fitness before locking in any plans.
He noted that he is aware of the deadline and intends to make a thoughtful decision based on how his body progresses in the coming months.
EuroBasket 2025 is scheduled to take place from August 27 to September 14, with games hosted across four countries: Cyprus, Finland, Latvia, and Poland. France is set to compete in Group D, alongside Poland (one of the hosts), as well as Belgium, Iceland, Israel, and Slovenia.
While French fans and basketball followers worldwide are hopeful to see Wembanyama don the national jersey again this summer, his participation will ultimately hinge on how well his body recovers over the coming months.
