Miami Heat rookie guard Pelle Larsson suffered an untimely injury on Wednesday, spraining his ankle during what he described as a “freak accident” in the weight room, according to Anthony Chiang of the Miami Herald.

“I was lifting and just stepped and got my foot caught in something,” Larsson explained. “So I just stepped on a twisted ankle, and it doesn’t feel great.”

The injury couldn’t have come at a worse time, as Larsson had been emerging as a key rotational piece for Miami in recent weeks.

With Andrew Wiggins sidelined, the rookie had stepped into the starting lineup for six straight games, earning praise for his defensive versatility and smart two-way play.

During that stretch, he averaged 10.5 points, 4.3 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 2.2 steals per game, showing promise on both ends of the floor.

Head coach Erik Spoelstra acknowledged that Larsson’s status for the upcoming Play-In Tournament is currently uncertain, casting doubt on whether the team will have one of its rising contributors available for the high-stakes matchups.

“It’s more frustrating than anything, especially when it happens off the court,” Larsson said. “It feels like you don’t have as much control. So it’s frustrating.”

The 24-year-old out of Arizona has quickly carved out a role with the Heat thanks to his hustle and ability to guard multiple positions.

Now, with the postseason looming, the team will hope for a quick recovery as Larsson rehabs his ankle in hopes of rejoining the lineup.
