The Memphis Grizzlies have provided an update on rookie Jaylen Wells, revealing that the 21-year-old is “likely” to miss the remainder of the 2024–25 season after suffering a fractured right wrist during Tuesday’s game in Charlotte.
The injury occurred when Wells was fouled on a fast-break dunk in the second quarter, causing him to land hard on his head and wrist.
He was stretchered off the court and later diagnosed with a concussion and facial laceration in addition to the wrist fracture.
Despite the severity of the incident, the Grizzlies reported that Wells is expected to make a full recovery.
He was released from the hospital on Wednesday and was well enough to attend the team’s shootaround on Thursday.
Wells, selected 39th overall in the 2024 draft, had been a standout among this season’s rookie class.
The 6’7″ wing appeared in 79 games for Memphis, starting 74 of them, and averaged 10.4 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.7 assists while shooting .425 from the field, .352 from three, and .822 from the free-throw line.
Known for his defensive tenacity, Wells often matched up against opposing teams’ top perimeter threats.
In his absence, Vince Williams Jr. was inserted into the starting lineup for Thursday’s game against the Timberwolves, while Scotty Pippen Jr. saw an increase in minutes off the bench.
