The Portland Trail Blazers have extended general manager Joe Cronin’s contract, committing to the executive who has overseen the franchise’s recent turnaround.
The news was first reported by NBA insider Shams Charania, who cited sources confirming that Cronin agreed to a multiyear deal to remain with the team.
The extension follows a notable second-half surge by Portland, which has gone 22-16 since January 19 and ranks in the top five league-wide in defensive efficiency over that span.
The Trail Blazers currently hold a 35-43 record, representing a 14-win improvement over last season, and while already eliminated from playoff contention, have shown measurable growth under Cronin’s direction.
Cronin originally took over basketball operations on an interim basis in late 2021 before being named the permanent general manager in 2022.
Since then, he has initiated a full-scale rebuild that included trading long-time franchise cornerstone Damian Lillard and acquiring young players and draft assets in return.
In addition to accumulating youth and flexibility, Cronin’s front office has prioritized defense and development.
While the Blazers are mathematically eliminated from postseason contention in the Western Conference, their late-season competitiveness has drawn attention from league observers.
The team has posted wins over multiple playoff-bound opponents since mid-January and currently allows 114.2 points per game — a drop from 118.0 earlier in the season.
