As the postseason draws nearer, the Orlando Magic have placed a strong emphasis on their defensive performance, using it as a foundation for their recent success.
According to Jason Beede of The Orlando Sentinel, the Magic have posted a 9-5 record over their past 14 games, a turnaround largely driven by their impressive third-ranked defense in the league.
This surge in defense has been vital as the team looks to secure a spot in the playoffs.
Wendell Carter Jr., the team’s standout big man, spoke about the team’s mentality as the season reaches its final stretch:
“It’s us getting closer to the end of the season, understanding that we need to be hitting our peak now,” Carter explained. “I know we had a lull in terms of our defensive rating, but we’re one of the top defenses in the league. And we’re going to continue to get better on that end of the court.”
While Magic experienced a brief dip in their defensive rating earlier in the season, their ability to return to elite defensive form has been crucial in their recent run of success.
Carter Jr. has played 7 seasons for the Magic and Bulls. He has averaged 11.9 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 2.0 assists in 380 regular-season games.
