Austin Reaves is making history with the Los Angeles Lakers, and his performance in the team’s 124-108 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans on Friday night is a testament to his growth. Reaves, who scored 30 points and knocked down six three-pointers, became the first player in Lakers’ history to make 15 threes in a two-game span.

When asked about his historic shooting streak, Reaves kept his response humble. “It’s special,” Reaves said. “LeBron throws me good passes, Luka throws me good passes, and I just shoot it. I just shoot them with confidence. That’s really it, but it’s special.” His hot hand helped propel the Lakers to their third win in four games and keep them firmly in third place in the Western Conference.

Reaves has been on a tear recently, showcasing his ability to score efficiently from the perimeter. Over the last two games, he made 15 three-pointers, showcasing a rhythm that is hard to ignore. Reflecting on his sharp shooting, Reaves shared, “It’s obviously good when you see your first couple go in. Last night I had my first two going, and tonight I made my second one. After that, it’s just about shooting with confidence.”

The Lakers’ trio of Reaves, Luka Doncic, and LeBron James combined for a staggering 92 points in the game. Doncic led all scorers with 35 points, including 11-of-11 from the free-throw line. James added 27 points and eight assists, helping Los Angeles overcome a strong first-quarter performance by the Pelicans.

Despite New Orleans taking a 30-25 lead after the first quarter, the Lakers bounced back with a 37-23 second-quarter surge, leading by nine at halftime.

Reaves credited his teammates, especially LeBron, for creating opportunities on the floor. “You got two of the best players in the league,” Reaves said, referencing LeBron and Luka. “It’s amazing. I chose to throw a hook lob pass to the 40-year-old. When I threw it, I didn’t think it was a good idea, and then obviously he continues to go get it.”

While the Lakers’ offensive firepower was on full display, it was the team’s defense that shifted the momentum in their favor. Reaves highlighted the importance of teamwork and staying locked in on both ends of the floor. The Lakers finished the night shooting 51.9% from the field and 92.9% from the free-throw line, along with recording 26 assists on 41 made baskets.

For Reaves, though, it’s not just about the statistics. When asked if he took a step back to reflect on his successful season, he remained focused on the team’s goals. “Not really,” Reaves said. “If we’re not playing, I’m golfing, and the only thing I care about when I’m golfing is trying to shoot a low score. I’m sure after the year it’ll all set in, but right now I’m just focused on trying to win.”

The Pelicans, missing several key players like Zion Williamson and CJ McCollum, were led by Jose Alvarado, who scored 27 points. However, New Orleans couldn’t keep up as the Lakers dominated the final three quarters. Despite hitting 14 threes at a 41.2% clip, the Pelicans were outscored in every quarter after the first and couldn’t stop the Lakers’ offensive efficiency.

As the Lakers continue to push for a high playoff seed, Reaves’ impressive shooting and the team’s collective effort have placed them in a strong position heading into their next matchups. The win also kept them ahead of Denver and Golden State in the Western Conference standings.
