Cade Cunningham secured seventh place in ESPN’s final MVP straw poll for the 2024-25 season, positioning himself as a near certainty to make an All-NBA team.
Cunningham is putting up impressive numbers, averaging 25.7 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 9.2 assists, all while leading the Detroit Pistons to a spot in the playoffs.
This success is particularly notable considering the Pistons’ dismal 14-68 record in the previous season, a remarkable turnaround.
In the 2024 offseason, Cunningham and the Pistons finalized a five-year maximum contract, which includes the Rose Rule provision.
This clause will raise his contract’s value from $224 million to $269 million if he earns an All-NBA selection this season.
Additionally, his deal will begin at 30% of the salary cap instead of the usual 25%.
“I’m genuinely excited to see what he, and they, can do,” a Western Conference executive commented. “They just have to go through it and see what your talent looks like on that stage…”
“Let’s see how he does against game planning for him over a seven-game series. There’s a lot of things you don’t know until you go through it.”
