Jimmy Butler is set to face the Miami Heat for the first time since his midseason trade to the Golden State Warriors, but he remains unfazed by the emotions surrounding his return.
Speaking ahead of Tuesday’s matchup, Butler made it clear that he is focused solely on winning. “It’s going to be another game for me,” he said, per the San Francisco Chronicle. “It doesn’t make any difference [how I’m received]. I’m a member of the Golden State Warriors.”
Butler played five-plus seasons in Miami, leading the franchise to two NBA Finals appearances. His relationship with the organization soured this season, culminating in multiple suspensions before the Heat ultimately traded him on February 6.
Since joining the Warriors, Butler has helped turn their season around. Golden State is 16-3 with the 35-year-old in the lineup, and he is averaging 17.3 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 5.5 assists per game. The team currently sits sixth in the Western Conference at 41-30.
The Heat, meanwhile, have struggled without their former star. Miami (29-41) has lost ten straight games and is clinging to the 10th seed in the East.
Despite their freefall, Warriors forward Draymond Green expects Miami to be motivated. “It’s a big game for Jimmy, just like they want to win for [Andrew] Wiggins,” Green said.
The Warriors and Heat will tip off Tuesday night as Butler returns to the city where he once thrived.
