Jahlil Okafor is back in the NBA after nearly five years away, with the former lottery pick signing a 10-day contract with the Indiana Pacers, according to NBA insider Chris Haynes. The deal comes after a strong stint in the G League with the Indiana Mad Ants.
Okafor, 29, has been performing well in the G League this season, averaging 18.6 points, 9 rebounds, and 3.2 assists in 30.5 minutes per game. His solid play has earned him the opportunity to return to the NBA, where he last played in the 2020-21 season with the Detroit Pistons.
During his time with the Pistons, Okafor averaged 5.4 points and 2.4 rebounds in 12.9 minutes per game. His career averages in the NBA stand at 10.4 points and 4.7 rebounds in 19.5 minutes per game.
Okafor was selected by the Philadelphia 76ers with the third overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft. Despite his promising start, his career has been marred by injuries and inconsistent play.
The 6-foot-9 center’s signing with the Pacers is seen as an opportunity to add depth to their frontcourt as they continue to compete in the competitive Eastern Conference.
For the Pacers (29-22), who are fourth in the Eastern Conference, adding a player with Okafor’s scoring ability and experience could be beneficial as they work toward a playoff push in the second half of the season.
While the 10-day contract doesn’t guarantee a long-term spot on the Pacers’ roster, it gives Okafor a chance to prove he can still contribute in the NBA. He’ll have the opportunity to showcase his skills and potentially earn a more permanent role.
