Terry Rozier is under federal investigation as authorities examine whether the veteran guard was involved in an illegal sports betting scheme. The Wall Street Journal reported that the probe is part of a broader inquiry into a network of gamblers and poker players suspected of rigging games across multiple sports.

Federal investigators are looking into unusual betting patterns on Rozier’s performance in a March 2023 game between the Charlotte Hornets and New Orleans Pelicans. The NBA was alerted to the irregular wagers at the time but found no violations of league rules after conducting its own investigation.

League spokesman Mike Bass confirmed that the NBA is cooperating with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York. The investigation has expanded following the Jontay Porter scandal, which resulted in a lifetime ban from the NBA after he admitted to fixing games.

Authorities believe individuals involved in Porter’s betting scheme had access to insider information that influenced large bets against Rozier in the 2023 game. U.S. Integrity, a company that monitors betting activity, flagged the game after multiple sportsbooks received heavy action on Rozier failing to meet statistical benchmarks.

Rozier, who had been averaging 21 points per game at the time, played just nine minutes before exiting with a foot injury. He did not return to the game and subsequently missed the Hornets’ final eight contests of the season. Some sportsbooks reportedly stopped accepting bets on his statistics that night due to the unusual wagering patterns.

This investigation marks the third instance in recent seasons where U.S. Integrity issued alerts about NBA betting activity. Two were related to Porter’s games, and the third involved Rozier. The federal probe is also exploring potential links between the betting ring and college basketball.

Rozier has not been charged with a crime or accused of wrongdoing. The investigation has not determined whether he intentionally influenced his performance for betting purposes.

Now 30 years old, Rozier is averaging 12.1 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 2.9 assists in 28.4 minutes per game for the Miami Heat this season. He is currently in the middle of a lucrative contract worth $96 million.
