De’Aaron Fox has reportedly identified the San Antonio Spurs as his preferred trade destination, with the Spurs expressing mutual interest in acquiring the star point guard.
However, the Spurs are not alone, as numerous teams are exploring ways to trade for Fox. The Sacramento Kings continue to evaluate offers as the crucial Feb. 6 trade deadline looms.
In a recent report, NBA insider Shams Charania highlighted the surge in trade activity involving Fox: “The Kings have received dozens of phone calls and offers in the last 30 hours since I reported this,” the analyst shared on Wednesday evening.
“But here’s the most important thing to know – I’m told the San Antonio Spurs, according to league sources, are De’Aaron Fox’s targeted, preferred destination. And San Antonio is among the interested teams in Fox.”
Fox’s appeal across the league is undeniable. At just 27 years old, he’s entering the prime of his career and holds a max contract that extends until 2026.
Charania emphasized the significance of his availability: “This is someone that has a massive market right now. He’s jumped to the top of the trade landscape ahead of the February 6th NBA trade deadline. He’s in the prime of his career. He’s a max contract player.”
Given Fox’s current value and the length of his contract, the Kings face a pivotal decision. They must weigh the possibility of securing the best deal now against waiting for the offseason, when the pressure to trade him may increase as his contract approaches expiration.
“These types of deals don’t happen overnight though,” Charania explained. “The Kings are going to have to balance potentially finding the best offer for him right now when he has a year-and-a-half left before his deal expires, or the inevitability of a trade in the offseason.”
For teams like San Antonio, the current window presents an opportunity to make a franchise-altering acquisition.
“And if you’re an interested team, like the Spurs are, and De’Aaron Fox might have the same interest in you, here is your chance to potentially get a game changer,” Charania added.
Fox’s long-term future in Sacramento seems increasingly unlikely, as sources suggest he is not expected to sign a contract extension.
The Kings’ decision to potentially move him could mark a significant turning point for the organization, as they seek to reshape their roster while maximizing value from one of their premier assets.
