Brooklyn Nets forward Cam Johnson remains a key figure in ongoing trade discussions as the NBA trade deadline approaches next week. However, his potential return to action may not occur until just before that deadline.

The team has confirmed that Johnson, who is dealing with a sprained right ankle, will not be re-evaluated until sometime next week.

Speaking to the media ahead of Monday’s game, Nets head coach Jordi Fernandez emphasized the team’s cautious approach to Johnson’s recovery.

“He’ll be reevaluated I think next week. He’s out right now,” Fernandez explained. “Obviously we want him to get that ankle right. He was good when he came back, it’s just like he tweaked it again twice.

“And again, it’s unlucky, but we just want to make sure that now it’s strong enough that he’ll be able to play through things and he’s 100 percent.”

Fernandez expressed the team’s eagerness to have Johnson back on the court, noting his leadership and overall contributions.

“Obviously, we want him back. We love having Cam Johnson, because you guys know his leadership and also the impact he has for us, but right now this is the situation that we have to deal with.”

Johnson initially injured his ankle on January 2, leading to a five-game absence. Although he returned to the lineup, he re-aggravated the injury on January 21.

So far, the lingering ankle issues have forced the veteran forward to miss a total of 10 games this season.
