A.J. Dybantsa, widely regarded as the leading prospect for the 2026 NBA Draft, has committed to playing for BYU in the upcoming season. While attending the NBA Paris Games, the 6-foot-9 forward shared with ESPN his aspirations of one day teaming up with Victor Wembanyama on the San Antonio Spurs once he reaches the NBA stage.
“I think Victor is just ridiculous; the things he does are just crazy,” Dybantsa remarked, marveling at Wembanyama’s unique abilities. “I just think we would’ve been a crazy duo. Now the odds of that happening are very slim. But I mean, it was just a thought that came up in my mind when he got drafted. But you never know.”
Despite acknowledging the slim likelihood of playing alongside Wembanyama, Dybantsa’s imagination illustrates his respect for the Spurs’ star and the tantalizing potential of such a pairing.
Looking ahead, Dybantsa is laser-focused on being selected as the first overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, a lofty goal that motivates him to refine specific aspects of his game. Chief among those is his perimeter shooting, a skill he intends to sharpen while at BYU.
“I’m working on improving my shot. I’m trying to shoot 40% from the three-point line,” Dybantsa explained. “Obviously, I’ve got to extend my range because the farther up I go, the farther the line gets.”
