Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards is inching closer to an undesirable anti-record held by LeBron James. After the Timberwolves’ tough loss to the Memphis Grizzlies, Edwards remains 0-12 on go-ahead or game-tying field goals in the final five seconds of the fourth quarter or overtime.
This statistic, shared by ESPN’s Michael C. Wright, now places Edwards second for the most missed attempts without a make since entering the NBA in the 2020-21 season. The only player with more attempts is James, who went 0-19 during that span.
Despite his struggles in clutch moments, Edwards is having a standout season. The 23-year-old is averaging 26.1 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 4.3 assists per game in 36.7 minutes.
Edwards’ latest potential game-winner came with just five seconds remaining in the Timberwolves’ 108-106 loss to the Grizzlies. Edwards, who finished with 32 points, launched a contested three-pointer, but his shot fell short as Jaren Jackson Jr. and Desmond Bane applied suffocating defense.
Jackson Jr. led the Grizzlies with 24 points, including 15 in the final quarter, as Memphis overcame a late deficit to extend their winning streak to three games. Jackson also grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked two shots, providing a dominant performance down the stretch.
Bane added 22 points for Memphis, including four three-pointers, while Ja Morant contributed 19 points despite struggling from the field. The Grizzlies capped off an 11-0 run late in the game, sealing their comeback win over the Timberwolves.
The Timberwolves’ bench, led by Naz Reid’s 29 points and 8 rebounds, kept the game close. Reid provided an offensive spark with 15 of his points coming in the fourth quarter, while Jaden McDaniels anchored the defense with 12 rebounds.
However, turnovers and missed opportunities in the final minutes allowed Memphis to capitalize. Rudy Gobert struggled offensively, finishing just 1-of-5 from the field, and the Timberwolves were unable to match Memphis’ depth down the stretch.
The Timberwolves, who reached the Western Conference finals last season, are currently struggling and sit at 9th in the Western Conference with a 22-21 record. Despite Edwards’ individual performances, Minnesota’s inconsistency remains an issue.
