A Los Angeles Clippers source confirmed to Law Murray of The Athletic that Kawhi Leonard will remain sidelined for Friday’s game against the Golden State Warriors due to a right knee issue.
Murray, who had previously anticipated Leonard’s season debut this Friday after observing his progress in contact practices and a recent three-game road trip with the team, noted that Leonard’s return will be postponed for at least one more game.
While Leonard’s absence continues, the Clippers received a boost last week with the early return of Derrick Jones from a right hamstring strain, as Murray reported for The Athletic.
The 27-year-old forward made an immediate impact in Thursday’s victory over his former team, the Dallas Mavericks. Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd praised Jones’ contributions during his time in Dallas, noting his versatility and professionalism.
“Derrick was a big part of our success last year,” Kidd said. “He was the last to sign with us … he made us a little bit more athletic. He could guard one through five. He shot the three well for us. And he’s a pro.
“He comes to work every day to do his job. We’re happy for his new contract. Unfortunately, he’s on the other side. But the Clippers got a pro.”
As the Clippers await Leonard’s return, Jones’ presence has been a welcome addition, providing valuable minutes and energy on the court.
Jones has played 9 seasons with 6 teams, including the Bulls and Heat. Over 447 regular-season games, he has averaged 6.9 points and 3.3 rebounds.
