According to NBA insider Marc Stein, the Washington Wizards are actively seeking trade opportunities for forward Kyle Kuzma. Stein reported on his Substack that there is a “rising belief leaguewide” that Washington is eager to part ways with Kuzma ahead of the February trade deadline.
The 29-year-old forward, now in the second year of a four-year, $90 million contract, does not have a formal no-trade clause. However, the Wizards gave Kuzma input on his future last year, an unexpected move that led to the Mavericks pursuing other trade options. Stein reports that Dallas is not interested in pursuing Kuzma again.
This season, Kuzma has struggled with injuries, appearing in only 12 of Washington’s 26 games. Despite limited availability, he is averaging 15.8 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 1.9 assists in 27.5 minutes per game.
The Wizards have been one of the league’s weakest teams, sitting at the bottom of the standings with a 4-22 record. Their struggles suggest they are focusing on rebuilding and eyeing top prospects in the 2025 NBA Draft.
Kuzma’s desire to leave the rebuilding team aligns with the organization’s apparent strategy to accumulate assets for the future. Stein noted that Kuzma “would want to depart this time,” given the team’s lack of competitiveness.
Last year, Kuzma was linked to the Mavericks before the Wizards pivoted and traded Daniel Gafford instead. The Mavericks’ trades helped them make a deep postseason run, culminating in an NBA Finals appearance.
The next six weeks will be crucial for the Wizards as they explore potential suitors for Kuzma.
